Little free library boxes are in many communities and provide easy access to books for local families. The non-profit organization Little Free Library initiated the movement of having these book-exchange boxes to build communities, inspire readers, and provide easier access to books for all through a global network lead by volunteers and communities.
It's a great service to our smaller rural communities that don't have a nearby library available to them and provides convenient 24/7 access to books.
The concept of the Little Free Library is you take a book and leave a book in exchange so there remains a constant circulation of books available.
From Readers to Leaders: The Impact of Little Free Libraries
Having these book-exchange boxes in more communities can empower and promote literacy with the opportunity to read without limitations of time, space or privilege. The only problem is often times, especially in rural areas where families may not have a collection of books, is these library boxes are not replenished.
So this summer I have made it my personal mission to try and deliver books to replenish as many of these little library boxes as I could until I run out, with a little over 500 books that were generously donated from schools and a former teacher.
While there is a current map on Little Free Library box locations, there are many communities we have visited where book exchange boxes were voluntarily installed through community organizations that are not listed. For instance, all of the former St. Landry Parish Head Start Centers had a Readers Are Leaders book exchange box installed although these are not listed on the LFL registry.
As we visit each location throughout Acadia and St. Landry Parish I will update this directory accordingly.
