Considering homeschooling? Then you've come to the right place! There are many questions and considerations when it comes to choosing homeschooling for your child's education.
When faced with the new challenge of virtual learning in the wake of COVID, I found myself overwhelmed trying to wrap my head around how to make this work for my family. Thankfully I wasn't alone in this and many other parents were struggling with the same challenges.
With the help of a few fellow moms and friends who have experience in homeschooling I was able to find a lot of helpful information, which you will find here in this guide!
Facebook Groups
Finding local homeschool Facebook groups offers a world of support for first time homeschooling parents! These groups and Facebook Pages provide a community of other homeschooling parents where you can connect, organize a group to meet for social visits, and find support. Most of these groups are moderated and you have to ask to join but are a great way to dive in! Homeschooling in Louisiana is a great group to start with where you can find really helpful information about Louisiana Laws, information on switching schools to homeschooling and valuable info for support from fellow homeschoolers.
Co-Ops
Co-ops for homeschoolers are groups of parents that organize a central location to meet and teach each other's children cooperatively. These groups offer socialization for homeschooled kids and skill-sharing among other homeschoolers. These are especially helpful if you're not comfortable in certain subject areas you'd like for someone else to help teach to your child. Co-ops typically meet on specified days for weekly classes, social gatherings, and even take frequent field trips!
Contrary to what you may have heard from common misconceptions around homeschooling, there are many opportunities for homeschooled children to socialize and engage in community activities. Fun fact- each parish has its own 4-H extension office where you can actively participate your homeschooler with their local 4-H Chapter!
Louisiana Virtual Academy and University View Academy are tuition-free K-12 online programs. There are many different types of online homeschool programs and Homeschoolers Resources Group is a great place to get ideas on what each program has to offer from other parents' perspectives.
For simplification purposes, we've narrowed down our guide to Cottage Homeschool Programs - these are local homeschool programs that meet in person for lessons and activities.
