A Letter from Your Editor

By Macaroni KID Publisher, Courtney J. February 15, 2024

As a local publisher for Macaroni KID we are committed to connecting families in our local community with resources to help you find your family fun from local events, library activities, at-home activities and more. We also cater to the needs of parents by offering helpful articles on dinner ideas and parent-related topics just to name a few.

One of my favorite things as a Macaroni KID publisher is actually connecting with local families in my community through the activities we participate in and partnerships with local businesses and organizations.

But we know for some families it's not always fun and good times, especially when struggling with financial hardships and unexpected life changes that can come your way. One local organization in St. Landry Parish, the Opelousas Pregnancy Center, is striving to help make a difference for expecting women and new moms who may find themselves in crisis. Recently they reached out to the public for a need of volunteers and diapers to help stock their closets.

We decided to help out by reaching out to local businesses and law enforcement for assistance in hosting a community diaper drive. Benny's Supermarket in Opelousas and the Port Barre Police Department have both agreed to have donation drop-off boxes for community members to drop off needed supplies that will help new mothers in the community.

Sizes needed include: Newborn diapers, size 3, 4 and 5.

In addition to their diaper drive, the center also puts out a wish list each week of additional items that are needed. These include:

  • Newborn socks
  • Baby washcloths/hooded towels
  • Baby bath wash
  • Bottles
  • Infant car seats

These items can be dropped off directly at the Opelousas Pregnancy Center located at 421. N. Main Street in Opelousas Monday-Thursday between 9am-5pm and Fridays 9am-12pm. Drop off boxes have also placed near the entrance of Benny's Supermarket in Opelousas and the lobby at the Port Barre Police Station.
