Our Day at the Eunice Community Sensory Garden

By Macaroni Kid Publisher, Courtney J April 27, 2022

For Earth Day we took a little trip to the Eunice Community Sensory Garden to help volunteer our time helping plant some new plants in the garden! We also brought some handmade seed-embedded heart cards which contained a variety of wildflower seeds for them to give out to visitors who come by the garden to take home or plant wherever they'd like and watch them grow!

We had the pleasure of planting new bell pepper plants, some dwarf pea seeds and beans in their Food Pharmacy!

The Eunice Community Garden's vision aims to help improve the health of Eunice and St. Landry parish residents, specifically those with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Through the Food Pharmacy program candidates will be referred by their primary physician based on the severity of their condition and willingness to participate in 20 hours of health and educational activities focused on chronic disease prevention and reduction.

We also visited the Sensory Garden and enjoyed the many features it has to offer for the kids! Kids can skip and hop right into the garden on the painted hopscotch walkway as you enter the sensory garden. There is a sound wall with different elements to make different types of sounds as well as switches and latches for fine motor skill development.  There is also a play area where kids can scoop up and push trucks through the gravel and adorably painted characters on the fence that make the space very inviting!

The sensory garden is a must-see if you have littles and is open on Saturdays from 8am - noon for casual play dates! The  directors are very friendly and knowledgeable for a fun visit to let the kids learn about the variety of plants. You can also call and speak to Randy, the director, at 337-580-2993 to schedule a private visit of the garden if your child has special needs or accommodations to avoid large crowds and they would be happy to assist you.

The City of Eunice as well as Acadia Parish participated in the state-wide Love the Boot Week encouraging the community to get out and help clean up the city, recycle or plant new plants. My Macaroni kids wanted to pitch in so we helped in efforts throughout Acadia and St. Landry parish visiting some of our favorite spots like the local parks and the library to help clean up litter and helping out in planting in the Community Garden.
