September is Library Card Month

Get the Most from Your Local Library

By Macaroni Kid September 13, 2021
The American Library Association and libraries unite for the month of September to encourage children to sign up for their very own library card!  Now, when you think about the library you probably think about borrowing books or doing research for a school paper or project. While these are things that you can do at the library, there is so much more that you can get from your local library.

We're frequent flyers at the libraries in St. Landry and Acadia parish! Here are a few “outside the books” things that you can do at your local library:

Check out an e-book. Reading books on a Nook or Kindle has become very popular recently. And if you don't have an e-reader, the library may have them available to loan out. Check out the e-books available on Acadia Parish Library, Eunice Public Library, or Opelousas Public Library for more!

Utilize a database. Many libraries have a variety or databases available for research on topics such as genealogy, finance, history, authors, legal information, careers, languages and more. Some may also have a database available for taking practice tests. If you are preparing for an academic test, career advancement, or to get into college or grad school, this database may help you figure out which areas you need improvement or to just get over those test taking jitters by helping you practice.

“Rent” a DVD for FREE. Most libraries have a collection of DVDs and CDs available to borrow. So before spending money to stream, download or purchase, ask your local librarian about borrowing from a variety of movies from Disney titles to the hottest new release of the summer. They may not have every movie you are looking for but you might just find a movie you forgot you wanted to see or a movie you remember watching as a child and are now excited to share with your little one.

Hang out in the kids’ section. In addition to children's books, many libraries have play areas, computers to play games, story times and other weekly or monthly programs. The programs are typically free and are great for when you want to get the kids out of the house but don't want to spend a fortune at the movies or on a class. Check our Community Calendar for upcoming story hours and crafts at a local library near you.

Printing and Faxing Services. Local libraries typically offer printing services such as making copies, printing, and even faxing for a small fee. If you don't have a printer at home or needing to get a document faxed make use of these services while your kiddos browse the children's books.

Cheap or FREE Used Books to Own. You can bring the library into your own home by purchasing used books from your local library at prices wayyy cheaper (or even FREE) than you will find in any bookstore. Sometimes they will have additional things for sale such as DVDs, or puzzles too! Our local library always has a nice selection of used books for as little .25 cents. Sometimes we exchange older books that are still in great condition my kids no longer read or interested in so we can make room for more books on the shelves!

Free Classes - Many of our local libraries offer free classes such as computer workshops or free tutoring services for kids and adults! Check with your librarian about these library options and others that may be available and put that library card to good use for you and your family!
