You may have already figured out that I am a firm believer in kids in the kitchen. I think it is crucial for kids to spend time not only observing, but actually participating in food preparation. So much can be learned through their involvement.
They first of all spend quality time with the adult that is helping them. They strengthen motor skills with tasks appropriate for their age, whether it be peeling, rolling out dough, shaping cookies, cutting vegetables. Cooking is a perfect chance to practice math when measuring. I could go on and on!
A very simple and fun thing that you could prepare with your children at this time of year is King Cake. I realize that this may sound absurd to you, but who says it has to be complicated? Little children receive so much joy from making their own treat.
For a simple King Cake treat, use a can of cinnamon rolls. Separate each roll, roll it out and shape it into a small circle. Bake as directed. Use the icing that comes with the rolls. Sprinkle with Mardi Gras colored sprinkles. You can easily make these by putting a small amount of granulated sugar in a zip lock bag and adding a few drops of food coloring. Mix it up, and use. Many children are willing to try things that they have never before been willing to try, if they have had a part in preparing it.
